1.) Help with exiting a vehicle.

Since having back surgery exiting a vehicle has been a problem for me. I have tried several products to aid me in this task. The problem was so bad, that I had to trade vehicles to find one that is easier on me. I now have a full size Mercury Grand Marquis, they don't come any larger than that in my price range.
Even after all that, I was still having a problem. I will note that the typical assist handle in most vehicles provides no assistance at all in exiting the vehicle. This is because they are inside the vehicle and can not be used to help exiting unless you are double jointed.
I did a lot of research and it came down to the "Handybar" or an assist strap that temporarily install through an open window and wraps around the door frame. The problem with the latter is that you need assistance to safely use it. Someone must be there to prevent the door from closing when you put weight on the strap. This more of a problem if you are parked on an up hill slope. The "Handybar" requires no assistance to use; even when parking on a hill. As long as the door detents will hold the door open, it is a one person operation.
I have only one negative which I plan to write the company about. It is my opinion that the handle design should be modified to raise the height of the handle when it is installed in the door latch. I have found that this latch is not at a uniform height in all cars. In some of the smaller vehicles I have tried it in, the handle is low enought to affect its useability. This is because of the vehicle size, the design places the door latch at a much lower height. However in my retro full size American four door sedan the product works very well indeed.
2.) A handybar that works

I needed something to assist my mother in getting out of the car. We tried a different type of bar which worked ok but occassionally slipped. I bought this one hoping that it wouldn't slip and it didn't on my Nissan Altima so it's much better than the competition for my car.

I bought this for my uncle and I had gotten another one for my father. It's great for those who need a little help getting out of any car. It doesn't matter what kind of car you have this will work. I would buy it again.

I bought this for my elderly father who broke his leg. He's been blessed to be healing nicely, and this gadget is perfect to help get him in and out of a car. It works as described and fits in exactly the right position to grab onto. Otherwise there is nowhere to hold to put weight on the arms to try to stand up.

And you don't have to be old to use it!
I had surgery on my leg, the end result being that my leg was painful and swollen, and I had absolutely no ability to move it in any way that made walking easy. Getting in and out of a car with a nearly useless, swollen leg was impossible.
When I was released from the hospital, I somehow managed to make it in the car. But getting OUT of the car was impossible! No, I'm not fat at all, but my husband tried and tried, but I guess I was just a dead weight. He finally had to call the first aid squad to pull me out.
That was so embarrassing that I did everything possible to avoid going in the car. And then I decided to see if there was any device that could help.
The first thing I got was a swivel seat device that makes it easy to "spin" in and out of the seat. The second device was the Standers Handybar.
Between the two of these things, I'm mobile again! The bar goes into the hook thing that latches your door. It's very sturdy - nothing lightweight about it, and that means you can put your full weight on it, and it's not going to collapse.
I put it in the door latch, lean on it with one hand and use the edge of the dashboard as the other, and ta da! I'm standing on my own two feet!
You can also use the handybar to smash a window and cut a seatbelt if you find yourself in an emergency situation. I think the manufacturer tried to find other uses for it that a consumer would use to justify its purchase.
As if it needed any more uses! It does what it was made to do, and it made my freedom possible (since I've got months to go while this stupid leg heals.) All I can say is God bless them for devising it. It's the best thing to happen to me since I got out of the damned hospital!

This little device has been an enormous help for my elderly parents. I got it several months ago and keep it in my car for when I take them to the doctor or wherever. My mother was at first reluctant, and now says she's amazed at how much easier the handybar makes getting out of a car. My father, an engineer, took to it right away. Me? I'm just relieved that getting out of a car is less of a struggle for them. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

I work in home health and this product has helped so many patients transfer independently. They need to scoot forward on the seat, lean forward and push up. Many people who are weak try pulling up as stated in the previous review and it's just not efficient.

I saw this advertised and as my mother was always using the door jam for leverage to get out of the car thought it would be much better to use. It is - probably not so much with SUV's, but with regular vehicles, definitely an aid in exiting the car - gives her leverage to lift herself up.

This is an excellent product for my Dad who has extreme difficulty getting in and out of a car. Because his memory is poor, we do have to be next to him when he uses it to make sure he pushes down (and not pulls up) on it. I was worried that the metal part was too short and did not have a way to 'lock' it in, but as long as I hold down on the handle part to make sure it stays in while he uses it, it works fine. I highly recommend it~

I AM A PERSON WITH MS WHO STILL DRIVES WITH A BRAKE PEDAL ASSIST DEVICE THAT ALLOWS ME TO STOP THE CAR WITH MY RIGHT HAND. GETTING IN AND OUT OF THE CAR IS A CHALLENGE SOME DAYS WHEN THE MS FATIGUE SETS IN. THE STANDERS HANDYBAR ALLOWS ME TO GET IN AND OUT OF THE CAR WITH RELATIVE EASE, GIVING THE ADDED ASSIST AND STABILITY I NEED TO GET MY BODY OUT OF THE CAR AND STAND UP FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THE DEVICE WORKS WONDERFULLY AND CAN ALSO BE USED TO BREAK THE GLASS FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR DURING AN EVENT WHERE THE CAR IS SUBMERGED IN WATER AND CAN ALSO BE USED TO CUT AND RELEASE YOUR SEAT BELT SHOULD THE SEAT BELT FAIL TO UNLOCK. A THREE-FOLD TOOL AND AN IMPORTANT ASSIST FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITES THAT IS EASY TO USE.

When I purchased this, I was thinking about the convenience for my mobility-impaired brother to get in and out of my van. However, I accidentally put two in my cart, paid for and received two. My husband's eyes lit up when he saw them and claimed the spare. Me drives a pickup truck, and people sometimes have trouble getting in and out of it because it is high off the ground. He is also very safety-conscious. He once bought everyone in the family little hammers that will break the car window in an emergency. This device is even better. It not only serves as a sturdy support device with a well-constructed grip for getting in and out of a vehicle, but also an emergency glass breaker and seat belt cutter. I plan to purchase at least one more for my vehicle and keep it in mind for gifts in the future. The price is more than reasonable.

Product is well made and worked well for an elderly aunt who needed effort in getting into a large, tall SUV. I purchased one for my mother-in-law to use as an aid to enter and exit our car. It did not work well for us because we needed something she could pull up on to help in getting out of the back seat. The Handy Bar is made for leaning on and pulling it down in order to work. In my mother-in-law's case, she pulled up on it and it did not stay in place.
