Reviews of Standers Handybar

1.) Help with exiting a vehicle.
Reviewed by: Old Tom Las Vegas, NV - USA

Since having back surgery exiting a vehicle has been a problem for me. I have tried several products to aid me in this task. The problem was so bad, that I had to trade vehicles to find one that is easier on me. I now have a full size Mercury Grand Marquis, they don't come any larger than that in my price range.

Even after all that, I was still having a problem. I will note that the typical assist handle in most vehicles provides no assistance at all in exiting the vehicle. This is because they are inside the vehicle and can not be used to help exiting unless you are double jointed.

I did a lot of research and it came down to the "Handybar" or an assist strap that temporarily install through an open window and wraps around the door frame. The problem with the latter is that you need assistance to safely use it. Someone must be there to prevent the door from closing when you put weight on the strap. This more of a problem if you are parked on an up hill slope. The "Handybar" requires no assistance to use; even when parking on a hill. As long as the door detents will hold the door open, it is a one person operation.

I have only one negative which I plan to write the company about. It is my opinion that the handle design should be modified to raise the height of the handle when it is installed in the door latch. I have found that this latch is not at a uniform height in all cars. In some of the smaller vehicles I have tried it in, the handle is low enought to affect its useability. This is because of the vehicle size, the design places the door latch at a much lower height. However in my retro full size American four door sedan the product works very well indeed.

I needed something to assist my mother in getting out of the car. We tried a different type of bar which worked ok but occassionally slipped. I bought this one hoping that it wouldn't slip and it didn't on my Nissan Altima so it's much better than the competition for my car.

My 82 year old mother has severe rheumatoid arthritis which has necessitated one total knee replacement. She is now needing the other one done. Because of this she has great difficulty getting in and out of any vehicle. I saw this product and the "Standers CarCaddie" and ordered both. She is now able to transfer in and out of the car much more easily. She says it is the easiest she's been able to do so in years. We liked both products so much that we ordered another of each so that we don't have to remember to move them between cars. Do remember to check to be sure your car has a "U" shaped striker plate on the door frame as that is where it fits. Luckily we haven't needed the emergency features (seatbelt cutter and window breaker), but it is nice to know they are there, too.

I bought this for my elderly father who broke his leg. He's been blessed to be healing nicely, and this gadget is perfect to help get him in and out of a car. It works as described and fits in exactly the right position to grab onto. Otherwise there is nowhere to hold to put weight on the arms to try to stand up.

6.) This thing gave me back my life.

And you don't have to be old to use it!

I had surgery on my leg, the end result being that my leg was painful and swollen, and I had absolutely no ability to move it in any way that made walking easy. Getting in and out of a car with a nearly useless, swollen leg was impossible.

When I was released from the hospital, I somehow managed to make it in the car. But getting OUT of the car was impossible! No, I'm not fat at all, but my husband tried and tried, but I guess I was just a dead weight. He finally had to call the first aid squad to pull me out.

That was so embarrassing that I did everything possible to avoid going in the car. And then I decided to see if there was any device that could help.

The first thing I got was a swivel seat device that makes it easy to "spin" in and out of the seat. The second device was the Standers Handybar.

Between the two of these things, I'm mobile again! The bar goes into the hook thing that latches your door. It's very sturdy - nothing lightweight about it, and that means you can put your full weight on it, and it's not going to collapse.

I put it in the door latch, lean on it with one hand and use the edge of the dashboard as the other, and ta da! I'm standing on my own two feet!

You can also use the handybar to smash a window and cut a seatbelt if you find yourself in an emergency situation. I think the manufacturer tried to find other uses for it that a consumer would use to justify its purchase.

As if it needed any more uses! It does what it was made to do, and it made my freedom possible (since I've got months to go while this stupid leg heals.) All I can say is God bless them for devising it. It's the best thing to happen to me since I got out of the damned hospital!

This product does exactly what it is intended to do -- provide a rock solid handle that someone with limited strength and mobility can use to help raise themselves from a sitting position in the car to a standing position outside the car. Obviously, one must remember to remove the handle before trying to close the door, but other than that, it's very easy to use and easy to stow away until next time.

This is an excellent product for my Dad who has extreme difficulty getting in and out of a car. Because his memory is poor, we do have to be next to him when he uses it to make sure he pushes down (and not pulls up) on it. I was worried that the metal part was too short and did not have a way to 'lock' it in, but as long as I hold down on the handle part to make sure it stays in while he uses it, it works fine. They all helped in to varying degrees and in various ways, some of which he will continue with even now that he is recovered. Of all the things I got for him, the one he raves the most about is this simple little item. He says it is the one thing he found most useful to him and still does. He doesn't have enough nice things to say about it. I enthusiastically recommend it to everyone who could use a little help getting in and out of their vehicles. He has grown so attached to it that he asked me to get him an extra one just so he knows he and my mother always have one handy. When I purchased this, I was thinking about the convenience for my mobility-impaired brother to get in and out of my van. However, I accidentally put two in my cart, paid for and received two. My husband's eyes lit up when he saw them and claimed the spare. Me drives a pickup truck, and people sometimes have trouble getting in and out of it because it is high off the ground. He is also very safety-conscious. He once bought everyone in the family little hammers that will break the car window in an emergency. This device is even better. It not only serves as a sturdy support device with a well-constructed grip for getting in and out of a vehicle, but also an emergency glass breaker and seat belt cutter. This handle works great. It is very solid, sturdy and does not scratch the door frame. After inserting it into the metal door loop, it's about 6 inches long. The diameter is about 1.25 inches wide with a non-slip coating. The underside portion that's used to cut a seatbelt is too narrow to catch even an infant's finger. I bought this handle because my grandmother (confined to a wheelchair) needs something extra to grab to get in/out of my Jeep. It helps her to stand and maintain her balance during the transition. She really, really likes it. Overall it's worth 5-stars except the price is too high. By the way, it's a handle - so it looks and works the same on both sides of the car.

I bought Handybars for my partner, who has MS, and for my aged mother, who has a variety of health problems. One uses a large sedan and the other a minivan. The Handybar is a good, solid piece of equipment. Its usefulness, however, depends a lot on the placement of the car door loop in which it is placed. If the loop is too low, it's not much help, and that's the case with my partner. My mother has not yet used the Handybar, but I am optimistic it will be of help to her, as the loop in the minivan is higher. One point on how to use the Handybar: I mistakenly positioned it initially so it was pointed toward the front of the car. The correct position is pointing away from the car, and in that position it sits solidly in the door loop.

Thought having those attributes available in the car would be a good idea even if the grab design wasn't that great.

I drive a van and have major mobility problems due to spinal arthritis.
When I put the Handybar in the door hook on the driver's side, naturally, it was on my left. Since I am right-handed, it wasn't comfortable using my left hand for support as I pushed-off the driver's seat.

Not having tried it on the passenger side, I can't comment on its efficiency there.
Of course, if the driver is left-handed, it would be perfect.
However, I do think the length of the handle could be a little longer for better leverage.
