I found this item to be very helpful for several members of my family who, due to age and/or medical conditions, have difficulty getting on or off the couch safely and in/out of my recliner. It is stabilized by the weight of the furniture so it works best on the sofa. Very stable and capable of handling a person's full weight. I wouldn't suggest using it for total support on a recliner but more of an assist device for getting to the edge of the chair and added stability when rising. It assembled fairly easily even though there was an error in the instructions concerning where to use the shorter bolt, but I figured it out and reassembled it with no further problems. Took me about 30 minutes and I'm probably a B- handyman kind of girl. I was in the medical equipment business for a number of years so I'm pretty equipment/safety savvy. I do think the Healthcraft Advantage Pole is a more sturdy, really safe transfer assist device. But it must be bolted to the floor whereas the Couch Cane is portable. This device has worked out so well that I'm getting one for use at my sister's home and my mom's.

I think it would have great value to someone who needs assistance getting up from a couch. However, I was not able to see it in action as my mother, for whom it was bought, did not want to try it out. Older people are sometimes unable to accept doing things in different ways. For that reason I did not push this on her. She seems to cope without it for the time being so that is why I returned it unopened.

i purchased this for my father who just couldn't get out of his favorite chair. it works great. its like he's 10 years younger now. he just bounces out of the chair by holding onto the handle of the cane. i would recommend this product 100%.

4.) A must for those with trouble standing on their own

5.) Much Nicer Than Expected

I bought this about a month ago, and apparently it had been redesigned since the photo shown here. It is very sturdy and the appearance is nicer than I had expected. It was really easy to install and I think the redesign eliminated the problem some reviewers seem to have had with the bolts because mine only needed one bolt in one place. I had abdominal surgery and could not get up without help before I got the Couch Cane. Now I just use the Couch Cane and I don't need anyone around to help me. It is nice to enjoy the independence I am used to.

This Couch Cane is ingenius! It is simple to install (took me maybe 15 minutes)It is easy to use and it is very solid and secure. I like being able to get up without having to call for help.

The Couch Cane is great. My elderly mother likes it a lot. When it was shipped, however, I did not receive all the correct parts. I had no part #4 but two parts #5. I called the manufacturer and they said they would send me a #4, but again I received a #5. Eventually I got it worked out.

8.) Not what we were looking for

This item looked like it was a very good product. However, we needed something to help with getting on and off the couch for a person that had a leg amputated at the knee. While this product looked like it would be very useful for a person able to stand, it was not at all useful for our needs.

I purchased this product for my mother who has a degenerative muscle disease that has weakened her muscles so she has problems standing. My hope was that it could be installed to act as a more stable armrest on her couch. While the product was easy to install and is very sturdy, it mounts in such a way that it is in front of the couch. It cannot be moved closer to the person who is seated (like an armrest). This requires the person to pull themselves to a standing position with the couch cane. My mom is not strong enough to do this after she has been sitting for a while. Redesigning it so that the person who is seated could push themselves up using the product would make it make more useful.

I often go by Amazon reviews but this time I got disappointed. Too small a sample maybe?

Item handle appeared rusted.
Assembled item was rickety.
Item manual contained errors (use long bolts to fasten poles to floor stabilizers, not short bolts! and at least one other error that escapes me)
And sadly, the item did not help my mother. She was unable to get up despite her best efforts, using this device.

But as always, Amazon is great. I printed my free shipping return labels in minutes and I can get it out of the house tomorrow.

Doesn't work very well. A straight chair next to a couch is probably better. Even the use of a cane might be as good.
