Duro-Med 32 Aluminum Reacher with Magnetic Tip

Reviews of Duro-Med 32 Aluminum Reacher with Magnetic Tip

1.) Perfect for back patients
Reviewed by: Kathy Grace Austin, TX, United States
Rating:
This reacher was recommended to my husband by his PT after his L5-S1 fusion surgery. It's quite the handy little device. He uses it to grab produce out of the bottom crisper in the fridge, pick up dropped pens or paper, and to close the door of our car without twisting his back.

The curved grabber part has a grooved tip and it meets a flat edge with ridged rubber on it, giving it a fairly good grip on even rather slippery items. The small magnetic tip at the end will pick up very small metal items (think bottle caps) but fails at anything bigger. The other side has a little metal post, about 3/4" long, that serves as a fixed hook. It looks pretty small but hangs onto more than you'd think. Oh, and the pistol-grip handle has a hole in the butt--string a large cable tie through it to serve as a loop to help pick it up when it's dropped.

The 32" length is good for a man of average height (5'10" to 6')... for a short man or an average woman, the 26" version would probably be a better length. Medical supply houses carry it, but Amazon is cheaper, and delivered it in just a few days. It's been an indispensable device during his recovery, well worth the price.

The Duro-Med Reacher with Magnetic Tip is helping me get a grip on a variety of items!
Shoes, socks, peanuts, paper clips, pen, pencil and paper have easily been picked up by yours truly!
I just reach for what I want, place the claw on it, squeeze the trigger and pick up the targeted item.
The magnetic tip is pretty nifty. It picked up nails, staples and paper clips just fine.

If you're like me you have said at least one, if not all, of the following way too many times. Starting with: 'Oops! I dropped it, could you pick that up for me?' ~ 'Sorry, dropped it again! ~ Or in total frustration if by yourself, '*#@& That's just great! Now what?' ~ 'Ooh! That hurt! I should've just left it!'

If you relate to any of the above, then this is what you need. Gaining more independence is awesome. The Duro-Med Aluminum Reacher with Magnetic Tip, 26 Inch is ideal for taking clothes out of the dryer, as suggested by the previous reviewer. Thank You! I bought both the 26" and the 32" length reachers. I am using one for the dryer and one for general use. Now, I no longer have to rely on others . . . . . .
unless, of course, I drop the reacher! ~ Mrs. B.

I bought the reacher for backyard work and for those times when I'm too lazy to bend over when cleaning the house. It's a great product. The size is perfect. I'm 5'8 and anything smaller would be a waste of time. I thought the magnetic tip was only a gimmick but it has come in handy. The only minor gripe is the handle is a little skinny. I've gotten used to it though. I highly recommend it.

I love this thing! I am pregnant with twins and cannot bend over to pick up all the junk my kids drop on the floor. Now I can! This thing is dexterous enough to pick up small legos, pencils, wrappers etc. Yes I do feel like a litter collector walking around the house with this and a garbage bag but it's worth it. Best comfort item I've bought so far.

I've already purchased one as a gift for my vertically challanged sister-in-law. Lots of bang for the buck.

This grabber is well-designed, sturdy and works very well. I pick up pieces of paper from the floor without crumpling them. The magnetic tip grabs paper clips and other metal. Much, much more functional than the cheap ones you get for $9.95 at the drugstore.

About 3 weeks after my hip replacement and unable to bend down completely, I began to use what I call "the grabber". At first it seemed awkward, but in time, I began to challenge what "the grabber" and I could do. We were able to grab cleaning products from the lower cabinet, dust furniture with the dust cloth attached to "the grabber", grab canned goods from the lower cabinets (I never used "the grabber" for anything above my head.), pick up items that I would clumsily drop to the floor, and pull up my pants while getting dressed. I was given one of these reachers after a surgery I had over 15 years ago. We have since accumulated 3 of them and 2 of the 3 are still going strong (my oldest one just broke). It can pick up very small items or "large" items like a full can of soda / canned goods. The mouth opens to about 4" so a can is about the largest thing that will fit. However, this thing is built like a tank and can pick up just about anything your wrist can handle. I've picked up a gallon of milk with it and other heavy items. The magnet is very useful for picking up paper clips and the like. With a little practice, you can even pick up a grain of rice with it! One thing this thing has real trouble with is picking up paper. The jaw is made of hard plastic and has a hard time picking up anything that is flat on the floor. I recommend the reachers with the suction cups (not the folding kind) for things like paper.

This is a good tool. It has some limitations that I knew of before I purchased. It doesn't grab a regular sized can and the claw isn't super strong. What it is good at is picking up items from the floor or grabbing from a high or deep shelf. I have used the magnetic tip several times. I'm glad I made the purchase.

31.) Plastic Eventually Breaks
Reviewed by: dukemeiser Iowa, USA

I have purchased several of these over the last year. I use them for my job (I deliver mail), and they always seem to break in one of two spots: the trigger or the handle. Sometimes I will get a couple of months out of one, some times a couple of weeks. If the handle and trigger were reinforced or made with something other than plastic, I could likely use them forever. A few have popped the clamp on the rope off the end. If you can find the clamp and re-clamp it, it's fine but I had to tie a few in knots to keep them going.

I'm probably not a typical users of these, but they would be a much better reacher with my suggestions. For normal people, I would recommend them.

The Grab-it I had worked wonderfully, but it broke. It could even pick up a tiny Aspirin. The item I purchased to replace my broken unit won't pick up a piece of paper, and Aspirin or anything very small. I am not sure if the tip is properly aligned. It is a little frustrating to use.

35.) Change that to -liked-
Reviewed by: K. Worthington Bloomington, Illinois USA
Rating:

I'm keeping my former review, so you know why I liked it. However, the same day I posted my review, the tiny metal clip that kept the elastic band on the far side of the plastic "jaw" fell off, rendering it totally useless. I was unable to repair it, so it's pretty much just a stick now. Up until this point, it was excellent, but apparently it's not built to last.

I waited over a month to post a review, in order to use it and determine how well it works. So far it's fantastic. I can pick up paper, soda cans, and if I support the metal part, my big plastic medication box. The little plastic "jaw" part does go out of alignment once in a while, especially if you grab something at an awkward angle, but it's never permanent, and a small shake or quick move puts it back in place. I use mine to pick up clothing, books, cans, boxes, towels, and all sorts of things, big and small. I can pick up small things just as easily as large things. After having read a few reviews I tried picking up individual pills, and my grabber will do that just fine.

I have purchased several reachers in an attempt to find one that is capable of fastening the velcro closure of my shoes. This reacher seems to be poorly made, the jaw slips off to the side and is no help at all for the purchase purpose. It is adequate in picking up small objects and clothes etc off the floor when you cannot bend over to get them. The magnet is there if you drop a pin or some other small metal object.

The "Reacher" worked just fine UNTIL the string BROKE" -- now the only thing it is good for is picking up small metal items with the magnetic tip (good idea).
They should reinforce the spot where the string attaches to the aluminum AND use a stronger string, perhaps some type of fishing line.
With this problem, I could not recommend it.

40.) not what I thought it would be
Reviewed by: Debbie A. Bonde
Rating:
I have previously had this type of product with the 2 rubber grippers at the bottom. Often, one side would lose the screw, the rubber would fly across the room, and it was useless. Thinking this was a magnetic reacher it would be better, I was surprised. When you grip the handle to actually pick up something, the gripper at the bottom isn't large or strong enough to do the job. So, it renders itself useless. I just bought another with the rubber grippers at the bottom!

41.) Terrible Quality
Reviewed by: Robb Ruyle Montrose, CO USA
Rating:
Got this product last week, and immediately found that the jaws didn't close properly. The closing/grabbing mechanism uses a cord between the trigger and the grabber end itself, and the string is too long. Returning the item was not an option, because I need it, just having had back surgery. So I fixed it by crimping a ferrule around the cord to shorten the cord by about a half inch. A half-inch error!!

I had one of these from another manufacturer a couple of years ago, and loved it. Passed it along to a friend after I was through with it, and he used it until it wore out.

No more Duro-Med for me.

42.) Not sturdy, magnet will not even pick up five keys
Reviewed by: Katherine Runyon Livermore California
Rating:
I got this because of the length, but it has not worked well. The claw had one string to close it and the magnet is too weak to pick up my key ring with five keys. I have a shorter Sammons Preston version with a double string on the claw for a better grip. I am sorry to say I cannot recommend this product, from this manufacturer.

43.) Another near useless reacher
Reviewed by: D. P. Bell
Rating:
If picking up small nuts, bolts, and screws with the magnet, and
socks I guess this has a use. The construction is poor. The shaft
is very flimsy, u channel aluminum that bent when the pop rivets
that hold everything together were installed, making the claw
off center so that the ends didn't meet. Some adjustment with
a pair of pliers and now they line up but any thing weighing more
than an ounce will pull the jaws back out of alignment and the item will be dropped. The jaws don't even open wide enough to pick up a can of food.

I would not recommend this.
